Fitting an oil pressure gauge
 
I want to fit an oil pressure gauge to my old 600SS. Anyone done this before? What is involved?

Would fitting an instrument panel from a 750/900SS be the easiest option?

Should already have an oil *pressure* light, so do you mean temperature gauge?

The later models have a temp sensor in the inlet cam cover on the horizontal cylinder, so you may be able to get one of them and use that - dunno if its the same as the 900 though. A 900 instrument cluster with the temp gauge incorporated would certainly look better from an "original" point of view.

No, I mean an oil pressure gauge. Three times now I have nearly had heart attack when the oil pressure warning light has suddenly come on whilst out riding. Each time it turned out to be a duff switch. I was thinking of fitting an oil pressure gauge so that I could ignore the lying oil pressure light!

There isn't a pressure gauge on the 900s either, but I guess you mean replacing the temp gauge with a pressure gauge then? I guess you would have to find somewhere suitable to fit a pressure sensor (or replace the current on/off sensor with one that measures the pressure) which might be a right pain in the arse.

yeah i got one!!its on my 600ss--what you need is
dash from 900SS (95 on)900 sl or 888/851- this incorparates the the temp guage--
and also the oil temp sender that fits into the sump - the same place as the gauze oil filter(big 22mm nut on the left of the sump) the switch retains the gauze filter
the tricky bit is the wiring --the guage light is straight forward
depending on which rectifier/regulator you have
if its a standard one that operates the no charge light-then take a live feed from this
if the regulator is the later one ( the one that loses the charge light) i took a live feed from the general relay( the yellow/biege colored relay)
AND then when you come to fit the fairing and screen back on you will notice that the standard 600SS screen wont fit because the new dash that incorporates your gleaming new oil temp guage sits too high:( i got over this by tweaking the fairing subframe a touch-- if you can source a screen from a 900ss(95 on)900 sl then that will fit perfectly (OEM ones are like the preverbial rocking horse pooh)- a 888/851 screen wont fit without bodging the screen/fairing without drilling more holes- i was going to try an aftermarket dubble bubble but when i saw one fitted to another SS it looked more like a touring bike than a little sportsbike so i retained my original screen the guage works well but how accurate i have no idea i have seen it touch the 100 mark but soon dropped when i slowed down a touch generally hovers between 60-80 marks on general riding about

Pressure gauge? Looks more like a temperature gauge form your piccies mate...

My comment will join Antony's... Change your switch for a one which works well (which means you will need to change the bloody switch once a year :lol: ), you can't do really do more without it being a real pain in the neck.

DOH!!!!!! just testing your level of observation:lol: oil pressure switch is a 10 mmthread so all you have to do would be source a switch of the same thread and wire into an after market clock digital or analogue and mount it- some switches incorparate a connection to the oil pressure warning light as well- simple enough job if you can source the right bits and bobs--i guess knowing what the oil pressure should be may limit what clocks you could use- but just measured the oil pressure guage in my audi coupe and guess what -its the same size as the oil temp guage on the ducati!!dont know about the switch tho

I've fitted mechanical oil pressure switches in place of oil lights on cars in the past and it's a doddle. I ssumed it would be the same with the bike.

Mount oil pressure gauge. Wire backlight into speedo/tacho backlight feed.

Remove oil pressure switch.

Fit sender in place of switch. Fit capilliary tube to sender and gauge.

Stand back and admire handywork.

yep i have done the same on cars too mini's and escort's - do a search around the web -demon tweeks may be a good start- good luck let us know how you get on

Just remove oil warning light then no more false alarms.
