Big vans?

Having read this in the paper (so it must be true! ) I thought I'd copy this of another forum - maybe BDG/Rushjob/AndyB could confirm??

Fleet operators unaware of van speed limit changes
A commercial vehicle rental firm has warned that a number of fleet operators may still be unaware of a new law which will put 56mph speed limits on a number of larger vans.

The law, which comes into force from January, will apply to all Euro 3 diesel commercial vehicles and minibuses registered between October 1st 2001 and December 31st 2004 with a GDW of 3,501 to 7,500kg.

But despite the announcement of the new legislation being made in 2002, TLS Vehicle Rental says many managers are still unaware that they will have to refit many of their vehicles with speed limiter.

From January 2008, the same rule will also apply to all commercial vehicles registered after January 1st 2005.

Carl D'Ammassa, director of asset management at the firm, said: "This change could, we believe, have quite an impact on the operations of many fleets.

"A large number of bigger white vans have a GDW of more than 3.5 tonnes and having them limited to 56mph could mean an increase in delivery times, especially for routes that take in dual carriageways or motorways."

My Mercedes Sprinter has a Euro3 engine, but only 2800KG gross weight so I'll be able to keep overtaking all those big boys :D  Good job cos I take long enough doing 75 drops a day as it is

Pah, i'm not interested in speed, 56mph is way too fast for any vehicle anyway.

Yes CK the some of the hire companys are restricting larger vehicles i.e 75 tonners, but yer average Sprinter type van will keep on flying past flat out everywhere, especially if its a rent-a-racer.

I read about this as well, I wonder if it will be applied retrospectively, and be applied to motorhomes? Most motorhomes don't go that fast anyway but I often get overtaken by 7.5 tonners going about 80. The downside of course is that for people like me the A14 will now completely resemble a car park-I have enough trouble with 38 tonners trying to overtake each other, add in the over 3.5 ton vans and the whole road will grind to a halt. Time to find another route me thinks.............

Glad I dont have the most recent Merc truck any more - 5 & half tonner which cheerfully pootled at 70, and did 85 if I needed it to.
Would have taken me lots longer for doing the horse shows up & down the country.
Checked current race van and its 3500 so just inside the limit - phew!:)
