Another electrical item playing up - needing your advice on please!
 

Our DVD player (Sony, with surround sound) which is about 2 weeks under 2 years old, has decided to go pop:(

3 weeks ago it blew a fuse in the plug, this was 2 days after we had moved it all back after having new carpets.
AK changed the fuse (13amp), all was well.
Last night I went to put it on, and nothing happened:mad:
AK changed the fuse - it worked:)
However, when we put it on again tonight - bother me, the damned thing wont work again:mad:

Has anyone got any ideas for AK to check out please? (he said if it was only like a bike wiring he would be ok!:eek: )

I would start off by looking for dents in the bottom, loose bits inside or maybe a dry joint., it shouldn't require a 13 AMP fuse I would have thought a 3 Amp or 5 Amp would be the norm, so if its blowing a 13 Amp there is either a low resistance path (short) somewhere or its drawing a lot of current for some reason.

Buy a new one cheap skate;):D;):D

Its throw away tecnology, go onto pricerunner and order a new one.

...which is very environmentally friendly :(

If I were you and I could, I'd rather fix it. Would save me having to dump it.

Put an M10 bolt in :eek: instead of a fuse, then you can find out where the real problem lies:lol: :lol: :lol:

Could be as simple as dust/shite build up thats moved about when you moved it, take the cover off and give it a good (gentle) hoover with the hairy attachment.

If that doesn't work i agree with 'rcgbob44', it be throw away technology these days, nothings built to last anymore. If it lastest forever no one would ever buy anything new and worl economies would colapse :o (just my opinion)

Unless you have a wiring diagram, there's not a lot you are going to be able to do - assuming a wiring diagram was available, which gave test points and the expected voltages at each, you could (depending on your abilities etc) possibly identify if this was just a faulty component like a resistor etc, but without a wiring diag, you really are shooting in the dark. - and I agree with previous posts, there is absolutely no way a DVD unit should be running anything higher than a 5amp fuse. You might want to check your other similar appliances for over-weight fuses, unless they have smaller internal fuses to blow sooner, 13 amp fuses are not protecting your kit from damage !

cheers all - AK has done all the above, and also lobbed some switch cleaner in it too.
Changed fuse again for 3amp and this gets the standby lamp on, but as soon as you try to turn it on the light flashes a couple of times and then it goes dead:mad:

Cant afford to replace this right now........ rebuilding the race bike is more important:o :(

If anyone has an amp that we can cobble our speakers into for the moment, (we can run the old dvd player - argos 6 years ago for £40), do let us know

Have a look at all the cables coming from the dvd to the speakers, as you have said it's just been moved with new carpets etc it could be a speaker cable nicked by gripper rod (had this before) giving a short on the output stage of the amplifier.
As already said fuse should be 3 or 5 amp.

Don't wrap the fuse in tin foil as I've seen before, although you can follow the smoke to fault if you do this :D
