Oil Change Tomorrow - Oil Recommendations Please As it says above. First time I've done an oil change on my 748. I was planning to use a semi-synthetic 10/40, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears. If it makes a difference, the bike has done approx 13000 miles and is used mainly on the road, with occasional trackdays planned for later in the summer, post exams :( Thanks. :) [Edited on 2-5-2006 by zhed44] |
I think most here would agree that a full-synthetic 50-weight oil would be a better choice. Change it at 2,000 - 3,000 mile intervals. |
we use the mobil 1 15/50 fully synthetic for all ours. not cheap, but good stuff |

thanks for the replies. :saint: why is it a better choice? last change was at 10,000 with 10/40 semi-synth (as per spec?) just wondering why that weight of oil is a better option than the manufacturer's spec - thanks :) |
I use Shell 10w-40 and i change it every 3000-4000 km |
The 10W-40 thins a little too much if pushed hard, or gets really hot. When it thins the pressure drops and the big ends go................ The flickering oil pressure light isn't always down to a dodgy switch. Not a hard and fast rule but it pays to play it safe ;) Use a fully synth 15W/50 |
Shazam changing your oil at those intervals is a bit of overkill with synthetic oil. you can go ten times that no prob. personally I use cooking oil, mazola...so when i go out on the 996 foggy, it gets nice and hot by the time I come back from a ride... and the wife throws the chips in...hence we kill two birds with one stone...i get a ride and she gets to make dinner for us on the cheap. Mind you the neighbours have found out and keep coming round and asking for a fish supper ! but on a more serious note... a fully synthetic oil only contains a small percentage of actual synthetic components, most of it is still base stock made from mineral crude oil. depending on which spec your oil is manufactured to, you may only find between 16 - 23 % of synth products in the oil. how do i know...I work for Exxon Mobil of course, so if you want any questions answered on oils let me know, but Im off to Nigeria soon, so may not get a comp for a while. |
Thanks for all the replies and explanations. 15/50 synth it is then. Cheers |
Don't forget to take the sludge filter (pre-filter? - whatever you call it) out and check for any nasties. |
