Painting leather!

I have an Alpinestars jacket which has a yellow strip on the front and arms. Now that I have a red bike I would like to change the colour of this to red.
Has any one had any experience of painting leather?

Felix 15-Mar-2004 08:17

It the yellow bits are only sewn on over the rest, I'd take it to someone who repairs leathers and have them replace it with red one. Painting leather? Hmm...can't see that working too well with all the flexing and all.

Hi Col,

There is an advert in this months (April 2004) Two Wheels Only page 103 for a company called SOVCHEM.

In case you dont have access to a T.W.O. their details are as follows.

Unit 2, Alpha Business Park, Travellers Close, Hatfield, Herts. AL9 7NT

Tel 01707 272700 Fax 01707 270033

Email sov.chem@virgin.net

Sadly no web address listed.

They are advertising "Total refurbishment and Recolouring service for all motorcycle leathers"

Have never heard of them not sure if anyone on the site has? They may be able to give you an idea of the quality of there work?

They have a few bullet points on their advert:

Motorcycle leathers hand painted to your own design

Re-colouring

Repairs

The photo in the advert shows a guy spraying a set of leathers with a spray gun!!

Same as Felix not sure how effective this would be, they may coat it to prevent cracking???

Let me know how you get on?

Hope this helps

Regards

Scotty B

Don't know if you can still get it but you could buy paint for shoe repair from shoe shops comes in all colours and as its for shoes it is able to flex used to use it on my race leathers to cover up race track interface damage ;).
you sand down the surface to be painted (just enough to roughen the surface) apply a sort of primer then paint on your colour

Nine lives leathers in Guildford will tell if it can be done or not, they will do a good job but get a quote first they repainted my leathers where they had faded. very good match !!
but I thought expensive.

Me elitist! I`m just a poor "Old Man" trying to get by, but I always try and do whats best.

Besides, I`ve had the Laverda so long that its not really a secong bike, part of the family really.
