chain removal
 

is there anyway i can get the chain off the bike without any special tools?

I have a new chain n sprocket set - but cant figure out how to get the old one off - theres nowhere for me to loop it over :mad::mad:

Angle grinder? Grind off the tops of the rivets on one chain link.

Or maybe a hacksaw?

Thx mate - only prob is a new chain needs to go on along with sprockets - theres 5 teeth broken off :o

Looks like im gonna need to find someone with a chain tool for a DID chain :(

Why do you need a DID tool? R the chains different to any other (i.e. you don't simply press the pins in place and flatten the edges off with a rivetter which I have and can post to you if required)?????

Drop me a note if my 'normal' rivetter is of some use.

I think a normal rivetter should be ok - will double check (shazaam where are you :lol: ) but would be really grateful if you can help me out - mucho beer if I can get to Cadwell!! :D

I fitted a did chain to my 998s
with the chain remover/fitter from hein Gericke (£50+). I suggest allways grinding the rivett tops off first anyway.

Getting the old chain off is as simple as hacksawing though the side plates. They are very soft and easy to cut.

Another idea is to loosen the chain enough so that both sprockets can be replaced, and the chain hooked back on, ride to the local bike shop and get them to replace the chain - now i know you arent supposed to run an old chain on new sprockets etc, but would it be ok for 2 or 3 miles?

slight problem, the damn sprocket nut wont come off! Got someone to stand on the brake pedal while i stood on the breaker bar, it just wouldnt budge :(
