SPEED ENFORCEMENT TO REDUCE MOTORCYCLE CASUALTIES

Speed enforcement will be carried out on Northamptonshire’s Motorcycle Red Routes and roads leading to the Silverstone Circuit this weekend, coinciding with the opening rounds of the British Superbikes championship at Silverstone on Saturday and Sunday (Mar 27 and 28).

The enforcement is taking place as part of Operation (Anti -BC) Biker, the year-long series of initiatives run by the Casualty Reduction (And Prosperity -BC) Partnership aimed at reducing collisions and casualties involving motorcyclists on the county’s roads.

With high speeds expected at the Silverstone Circuit this weekend, Police are reminding motorcyclists and other road users that high speeds should be kept for the racetrack and not Northamptonshire’s roads.

Sergeant Jon Hodgson, from the Safety Camera Team, said: “122 motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured on Northamptonshire’s roads last year, a worrying 36 per cent increase on the previous year. And sadly 13 motorcyclists died on the county’s roads last year, nearly double the 7 rider deaths in 2002.

“Clearly this is unacceptable and ourselves and our partners are doing all we can through Operation Biker to reduce the casualty figures this year.

“Operation Biker comprises a range of education, engineering and enforcement initiatives, all aimed at improving road safety for motorcyclists.

“Whilst we know that motorcyclists are by no means always to blame for the collisions they are involved in, we have collected various speed data involving 5,774 motorcyclists and found that 51 per cent were exceeding the speed limit. Sixteen per cent were found to be riding at between 80mph and 139mph on roads with 60mph speed limits.

“The four main factors leading to collisions involving motorcyclists last year were: excessive or inappropriate speed, negligent overtaking, loss of control and inexperience.

“Clearly for the safety of everyone, speed should be kept for the racetrack and not our roads and as part of our effort to reduce motorcycle casualties, this weekend we will be carrying out speed enforcement, using mobile Safety Camera vans and Police Motorcyclists, on our Motorcycle Red Routes and roads leading to the Silverstone Circuit.”

In 2003, there were 132 collisions involving death or serious injury to motorcyclists in Northamptonshire, 27 of these involved single vehicles, 92 involved two vehicles and 13 involved multiple vehicles. The vast majority (101) occurred in daylight and in dry conditions (112). Most of the collisions occurred in 30mph and 60mph limit areas.
