748 oil filter leak

Help I have just changed the oil and oil filter and noticed I now have a leak from the oil filter after running it. The filter is hand tight and I smeared the oring seal with oil before fitting. If I need to fit a new filter can I change it without draining the oil from the engine? Thanks in advance

How bad is the leak ? can you tighten it a bit more ?

after a short run there is oil down the filter and on the bottom of the down pipe. I have only tightened it by hand, suppose I could tighten it more with the tool.

When I changed the oil and filter on a 999, previously only touched by the dealer/ducati for its 1st service. I 1st noticed the original was on sooo tight I thought I'd crush it before it came undone. I used my normal tightening spec for the replacement and it leaked. It need a good tug with my homemade leather belt tightener to stop it leaking. Suspect ducati have some **** quality castings that need the filter really tweaked up...

I will try to tighten is more to see if this stops the leak. Cheers Mac-Os

Before you do that, are you sure that the seal from the old filter isn't still in there? Sometimes they stick to the crankcase, and the new filter can't get a good seal. Be very careful not to overtighten.

pardon my ignorance but is there just the one seal which goes round the outer edge of the filter. If so then this was on the old filter. Yes I will watch i dont over tighten. Thanks
