1000ss or 800ss Hi everyone. Please can anyone help with information. I had a 1998 carbed 900ss a few years ago and I am now thinking of getting either a 1000ss or 800ss. Is there much difference in performance of the two models and if so which is the best buy. Any tips will be much appreciated. Dave |
Hi I can't comment on the difference between an 800 and a 1000, as I've got a 1000 but never ridden an 800. You notice quite a different riding position to a carb ss, it's a bit more focused. Italia in Lincoln have a great looking 800ss in, 04 reg, and only done 643 miles! http://www.italiamotoltd.co.uk/ Cheers |
I have a 800 mnster S2R and although its a good engine it still feels a bit lacking with its 72bhp which is less than your 900SS would have had, I think the 1000 Dual Spark engine would be the way to go |
Thanks for the replies. I did see the 800ss advertised at Italia but there is also a 1000ss at St Neots that I thought about. Still think that is what I would like. All the best Dave |
4 Attachment(s) Funnily enough I would agree with Kev-but then I have a 1000SS-actually 1078-for sale. The 1000 is definately the way to go, loads of grunt and a very free revving engine-especially with a little bit of extra effort................ Like: Big bore with high compression Pistal pistons Gasflowed heads Ducati Performance cams Lightened balanced crank Light flywheel 999R oilpump One off exhaust Power commander Slipper clutch Brembo Radial pumps Daylight MOT 174Kg wet weight with full tank! 108bhp and 78ftlbs |
Depends what each bike costs. If the bikes are of the same price-ish then I would go for the 1000 as it has a few extra bits chassis-wise. OTOH, it's very easy to extract more power from an 800ss with very little outlay. My mildly tweaked road example knocks out 82bhp at the rear wheel, will stay with a friends 996 til 140mph and has been clocked by others at 150mph. It would take a good 1000 to leave that. The 800 motor is very sweet and free-revving. Be aware that the 800 spec varies wildly. 800 wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ducati_800SS |
In my search for a 1000ss I looked at the one in St Neots. It's pretty immaculate, the only reason that I didn't go for it was I decided I really wanted a Red one, if you like Grey I don't think you'd go far wrong with it. They have had it a couple of months now, so they might be a bit negotiable on price... Quote:

Lovely. A very underrated bike IMO. As is the 1000ss. |
How fast is a tweaked 800ss? 150mph is where mine ran out of steam today according to the chasing R6. 145mph on my speedo running 15/41 gearing as opposed to the std 15/39. Not bad :) It'll be a very good 1000ss that beats that. edit: I wonder if I could get away running this motor in my Minitwin race bike ;) |
