Starter Motor Brushes

Hi

One of the things I had to deal with before putting my bike back on the road after it's long holiday was the starter motor - it needed new brushes but the ducati dealer in Aberdeen (who are generally pretty crap) told me that they were on 'back order' and wouldnt be able to supply em till who knows when... amazing! - bearing in mind that these are the same in any duke over 900cc, the 'fact' that they couldnt source a set in the entire country kinda blew my mind... so...

..me and a mate knocked up a set robbed from an old Sierra starter... took a bit of time and filing/soldering etc but they worked... until today :rolleye: ... went to take the bike out and click.. click... bugga.

I'd read (on the compatibility list I think) that gsx 400 suzuki's might be the same.. my mate's got a gsf motor sitting in his garage, and when I made the first ones we sized up the starter - i think the list says the starters are the same, but as they were obviously very different we never took it apart to have a look at the brushes... but today I thought I might as well check it out...

..turns out the end plate that holds the brushes and external peg is identical! - the same component... so I thought I'd let ya all know, if your starter ever goes wonky just head to the local bike breaker and get an endplate for a suzuki gsf400 (and probably other suzi's too), and your problems are solved :D

Cheers

I had mine rebuilt by a local car electric specialist for around £30 or so....
