Rev Limiter?

Hi all,

wondered if anyone can help, not had my 748 for long, but when I open it up in 2nd, I seem to get to about 10,000 revs and it starts spluttering, almost like a limiter cutting in, I then have to change up and its fine, is this right? where does the red line start? I thought I would be able to wind it all the way round the clock??

Cheers

jelley

Sounds like you're running a 916 ECU (fuel chip) in there!

Check the type of chip you've got and see what setup this is for.

New chips from Ducati around about 25 quid - find "Nattyboy" on the board as I know he has some genuine DP chips going cheap that may be suitable if you need one.

Its a 2 year old bike, would someone have swopped the chip??

Possibly - they may have fitted aftermarket cans and been given a chip at the same time.

The problem is that the 916/996/998 cans also fit the 748, and the fuel chips from the 916 and 996 also fit and look identical!

This is probably the easiest/quickest thing to check as you can do it yourself - check the engine management unit (the big metal block with the large connector on it) under the seat. Peel back the "DO NOT REMOVE" sticker and remove the rubber bung from the hole. You should see the fuel chip directly underneath. Note down any numbers on it (if it's an aftermarket chip it may well say exactly what it is, eg "916-45mm") and then check these with the Ducati spares catalogue to see which chip it is:

Other than that it may be a faulty TPS (throttle position sensor) which will need time at a dealer to be tested and fixed.

The limiter on my 97 bike comes in at about 12K (running a FIM chip). I try to change up at about 11K though as that's at my peak power point

Do you have race cans fitted (or were they fitted before) this may explain why someone would change the chip

Jelley 14-Jun-2004 14:33

Well its meant to be standard, with no mods! its got original cans on it!

I'll check the chip tonight,

cheers guys

Certainly doesn't sound right - I know of one other guy (in the Essex DSC, funnily enough!) that had a replacement ECU supplied second hand which was supposed to be from a 748.

He had exactly the same symptoms as you, and it turned out that the ECU had a 916 chip in it rather than the 748 one.

Can anyone tell me what chip I have in my 996 Bip?

Took the cover off and the chip was covered by a white plastic bit. Took this off and the paper sticker on the chip says "Ducati Performance 08054/11.

It looks like the chip has been changed coz the sticker has been cut out around the rubber bung. The bike is running Arrow carbon race pipes but I don't know the diameter.

antonye 14-Jun-2004 15:21

08054/11 is equivalent to the 965015AAA chip - 996 with Racing silencers.

Basically this should be fine with non-standard pipes upto 45mm.
