wheres all my power gone This year I started to wonder what it would be like to have an extra few horse power. I am currently around 46bhp. Their have been a few bikes sold recently that say they have the full 53! I have the AL900 igniters fitted and I dont see any glaring reasons for the shortage. Are all bikes capable of getting to 53BHP, is it pot luck. Should I just wait for another bike and swap the engine ? Dyno work looks good and nothing amis. Dont think it will make much difference but with my weight I need as much oomph as possible. Cheers Mark |
I ran two motors last year mark, each with a massive 44bhp. A good rebuild with attention to balanced weight, meticulous assembly, fueling, airbox mods etc would seem to be the way to go. Have you had a compression blowby test? Leakage from rings |
...some are lucky, some are well built, and some are never going to get there without a lot of time and money. Do a leak down test to check the cylinders/valves are ok, then get it on the dyno to see if is fuelled ok. If that all seems ok, the next thing would be the exhaust (take exhaust/airbox options to the dyno if possible, because a bad exhaust could lose you 3bhp easily). If that fails, you need to spend some real cash. |
Is that 46hp on a SAE reading dyno, in which case multiply by 1.075 to get DIN, its 53hp max DIN. Parkitt's dyno put mine at 48.33, (52hp DIN). That was after a head service at Woods, and a new horizontal barrel and piston. Compression good as it gets at 125psi. If your exhaust is aftermarket there may be a fueling issue? pete "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power". Abraham Lincoln ...53 horse power should do it |
Cheers guys, think the exhaust and fuelling are ok. Time for some meticulous stuff as well as seeing if the Dyno was SAE or DIN. Will see how she goes at Brands! :) Cheers Mark |
Steveo had my old one tested, 48, which was as it showed on the Parkit dyno at Cadwell from all the stuff I've read and listened to, the big thing is air/fuel/exhaust areas and can make huge difference. Then the cam timing makes a difference, as does how tight the squish is had all that sorted on my 620, started with 60, so lets see what it makes come tuning Thursday |

does seem like all bikes a few years ago had 50 plus, now most have less than 50 age??? you could always buy Hugh's |

That may be down to SAE vs DIN as covered earlier in thread Quote:
Joking apart I figure the cost of an engine with known good power could be cheaper than trying to get good Hp out of a poor performing engine (thats ignoring airbox / carbs / exhaust contribution to power) Working on weight reduction but once thats done I am going to have to do something about this lack of power. go for power - IMHO getting 50+ HP is more importnat than losing 10 kilos off the bike - guys like us can drop more than that with some easy-lax and rabbit food! Or come up to 620 where more power is there to start :) |
