klonky gearbox 6k on 749 gearbox as become very klonky wondering if it clutch or gearbox any thoughts |
Hi there try bleeding the clutch ( small bleed screw inside fluid reservoir), my clutch goes soft every now and again this usually does the trick. RS |
Not got a clunky gearbox myself, although I do miss plenty of gears.(Up and downward changes. )The bike has done just over 5k. Some of the mags have been complaining of ropey gearboxes on the test fleet. As Seb said,if its just clunky to engage 1st from standstill,(or neutral),it could be the clutch wants bleeding. |
Not got a 749 meself (yet), but my gearbox goes a lot clunkier (and gets more false neutrals) if the chain tension isn't right. All the adjustments in the linkages might want a bit of fettling as well. |
Hmm,the chain needs to be on the slack side of the correct tension. On the earlier bikes the sticker on the swingarm says 25mm of slack.(On the sidestand). On the '04 bikes this has been revised to 30-35mm. As for the linkage, well there aint nowt to adjust on the 749/999.Moving the gearlever down helps with upward changes. |
My 749 is also getting a bit dodgy on gear changes. Esp going into 2nd from 1st. I never use the clutch going up the gears, and it's started to slip back into neutral occasionally. Bit of a racket when it does! Now and again, also, gentle clutched changes down from 5th-4th-3rd it feels a bit unsure and sometimes gets false neutrals. I'm sure you're right about chain tension - I heard the chain slap this evening, presumably against the swingarm. Good job that this is possible *the* easiest bike to adjust chain tension! Ned |
