Early 916 recall for rear stub axle check

Anyone remember the recall on 916's last year for the rear stub axle to be xrayed and checked for hairline fractures? Well I had one last year and dutifully presented my 94 Strada to Speedaway in Birmingham to have the check done and all was pronounced OK

Today I have reliably (I think!) been informed that because mine is an early bike which is fitted with a axle which has a parallel bore all the way through it should have been changed as part of this recall for the later stronger type of axle which you can identify by it's stepped bore (which is caused by an increase in metal thickness in critical areas)

I've always wondered why I has a step on the shaft of my paddock stand but it seems obvious now

Can anyone confirm if this is correct or not and if so what's the odds on it still being possible to get this potential and possible lethal defect remedied by Ducati. Can't think why it wasn't done at the time unless they had none in stock but you would have thought they could have at least told me it needed doing!

I will be travelling at much reduced velocity until I have got this one sorted out and I think a call to Ducati UK is on the cards

Hello mike916,

For peace of mind I would phone Ducati UK, as with all things you will hear contradictory opinion.

If anyone is interested I phoned Ducati uk today and they said that the stub axle does not need changing:smug:

This is because it had passed the xray test. Thay also said that nationally there were actually very few that needed to be changed
