54mm system for 996r
 

Hi,

I have a 2001 996r with the original 50mm system with carbon end cans and chip (supplied with the bike).

Would there be a significant difference going to a full 54mm system? and would I need another chip?

Never rode my 998R with the standard 50mm system so can't say what difference the 54mm makes.
Going on experience from a 998 I owned changing the exhaust did upset the running when on the standard ECU and fitting the correct ECU did sort out the running / starting issues.

Alternatives are to go for a Power commander or getting the stock ECU remapped by someone like Wilf at Moto Rapido

The system on the bike is the standard header and link pipe with race cans and chip supplied with the bike. Was really just wondering if a new chip and bigger pipes would make a big difference.....and also where would I source one?.....they seem to be quite rare??

I have a 998s and when I fitted Termis and a PCIII and had it set up on a dyno I enquired about fitting a 54mm system.

The man said yopu would gain about 1-2 HP at the top end but loose lower down.

H e did say it's only worth fitting if you have head work done at the same time.

I'm very very happy the way my 998s goes now.

Is that a 50mm system all the way through?....also, who makes the PCIII chip? (Power Commander?) I guess its programmable?

PC111, as in Dynojet Power commander 3, ideally you want the USB (PC3 USB) version as you can set this to advanced setup where each cylinder can be mapped seperately, you can also have the Accelerator pump option initialised and setup. It piggy backs off the original ECU by tapping into the injector wiring (easy plug and play installation) and also takes a tap off the Throttle position sensor, and allows the tuner to play with the injection opening times to optimise the air/fuel ratio through out the rev range and from closed to fully open throttle

I'd expect a bit more than just a 1-2 bhp gain with a 54mm system fully mapped.

And it'll sound nice!!
