Oil Light Hi gang My '01 750 Sport has started putting its oil light on at unexpected moments. It's always when the engine is hot and it can occur at any revs (it may be that it comes on after I have hit 6000+ rpm, but I'm not sure). Switching the ignition off and on turns the light out for a short while, but it soon returns. The temp gauge is reading between 1/3 and 1/2, and there are no wild fluctuations in the readings. There is sufficient oil in the case. Has a sensor gone? I'm flummoxed (not difficult where mechanisms are concerned). Thanks! |
Oil pressure switches are not reliable. First step is to replace the switch. Cost about £10. Martin. |
Cheers Martin. Are they a fit-it-yourself part or a get-someone-who-knows-how-to-use-a-spanner part? I'm a reluctant mechanic at best (maybe "dreadful" is a better description?) |
Yes you can fit youself, you will need an open ended spanner to suit th switch which is about 24mm. Be very carefull not to overtighten the switch as they will easily snap. |
Yep, could well be the OPS. Check for small oil leakage around the unit. Mine cost me £18 only about a month ago and is easily swapped in 5 mins. Just unplug the connector at the top and unscrew the main unit. Screw in th new one, and as mart said, don't over tighten as the do snap. Plug in the connector again and away you go. |
Martin & Desmondo Cheers, mates. Just checked it all out, it's a doddle. I shall firstly try the "take it apart, then put it back together again" approach to see if that fixes it. Hey, you never know! I you both (plus I owe you some petrol, too, Desmondo) :D |

*ahem* |
Well, might be speaking too soon, but changing the OPS seems to have cured the "oil light coming on" problem. Many thanks once again, Martin and Jamie! :) |
