Car electrics

Anyone on here good with car electrics? My 1999 Fiat Marea's heater wont turn off. Well sometimes it will but normally in the morning its blowing hot all the way to work. By home time its working normally. Yesterday i drove down to Rockingham to watch Mort play in the rain. It was blowing hot most of the way, but i found that by switching various switches i could make it go cold for various lenghts of time. Turning the head lights on made it go cold!
The Haynes book is a bit lacking in this area but it appears to indicate that the temp control on the dash works by cables so i dont understand how it can be behaving like this.

Someone help me before i melt!!

could be similar to a prob i had on my old renault traffic the heater thingamy on the engine that the cable from the heater switch pulled was sticking so when you turned the heater down it would stick in the hot position even though the switch said it was off .

I know different make etc etc but thats what it sounds like to me if indeed it is operated by cable as the manual says

That sounds like what is happening Nigel but to be honest there is so much stuff jammed under the bonnet that i cant even see where the pipes run into the heater!
