748/996/8R measurement needed
 

Could someone with an R model 748/996/8 provide me with the distance between the front brake discs (say approximate centreline of one disc to the other).

My understanding is that with the R models, the discs run a slight offset (5mm) when compared to the Bip or S models.

I would like to compare this measurement to the distance bewteen the discs on my bip.

You mean the models that run the p4 4pad callipers. These use the cast discs which are offset 5mm. 998s 996r 998r.

The discs carrier is easy to spot as its spokes are a different shape.

Yep..the reason I ask is slightly long-winded, but basically I have fitted some Ohilns forks and P4 calipers on my 748 bip from a 996R, and yet they appear to fit straight on, although I have kept the original 748 bip discs and front wheel?!?!

If the 996/8R runs with offset discs...does this mean that my whole set up is slightly out of alignment now somehow...or what? If it was (say by 5mm each disc, then surely it would be obvious and the calipers wouldn't fit over the discs?) or do the offset discs from a 996/8R allow for a different width hub or summut?

If someone could measure the distance on their R model...it would be interesting to see if the distance between the discs are the same as what I have here.

I was aware of this difference when I bought the forks/calipers, and thought I would buy some discs aswell, but when I offered the set-up up to the bip front wheel...the caliper distance and disc distance appeard the same...and when I fitted the forks...all went together perfect?!?!?!

5mm difference? That's a standard Ducati tolerance isn't it? :)

If the discs are centered inside the calipers then you should be OK. You would definitely know if it was out by 5 mm on each side. It wouldn't work.

Things that affect the spacing are yokes, wheel, caliper mounts, calipers, disk centres. As long as you find a combination where everything fits and the discs run centre in the calipers, nothing rubs, etc. you should be alright.

Harv, when I fitted 998R forks + calipers to my Bip I found that I had to put a couple of spacers between the fork and the caliper because the disc would be touching the inside pads but not the outer ones!

Four 2mm washers on each bolt mount did the trick :)

my 996r is the same, on standard 996r discs,

ive also measured my 996bip 2002 model and this is witihn 1/2 a mm the same (tighter), iwould think this would be an acceptable tollerance. the discs carrier is however of differant shape/ internal pattern, although i am not sure I would think your bike would be the same and therfore ok
