748r gearing

I have put a renthal sprocket carrier with a 40 tooth sprocket on me 748r (standard is 36) what size front sprocket do i need to bring the gearing back towards standard? Or if any one has a 748r what setup are you runnung? Its just 4 teeth over standard sounds a bit extreme to me! Also how many links in the chain will i need?
Cheers

I'm running 14/40 on my 748S and it's the best mod I've done so far - it feels much quicker and you're also out of the poor fuelling at low revs when in traffic. You'll need a 96 link chain for this rather than the 94 standard.

top end

Thanks Antoyne, does it knock alot off the top end??

Mr_S 16-Aug-2004 01:36

Err, no.

I'm running 14/40 and still saw over 140 today.

Private road of course.

I've seen 155 on the clocks through France on standard gearing, and was getting it upto 130 on the back straight at Snetterton with the 14/40 combo .... and another gear to go! We decided that as this was probably the longest straight you'd do on a trackday in the UK, it was probably still overgeared.

So I wouldn't worry about losing too much top end!

Antonye,

How does the 14/40 affect the bike's performance as I'm just about to renew my chain etc. Does it give you better acceleration?

antonye 16-Aug-2004 16:35

No change in performance (it doesn't give you any extra power!) but it does make the bike feel a lot quicker as it sacrifices the top end for acceleration.

I really like it - 150mph in the UK is just unrealisitic so it makes sense to do it.

When I renewed my chain and sprockets, I went for a standard front sprocket (14t - about 16 quid from Ducati) a TSS alu quick-release from http://www.ducati-shed.com/ with 38 and 40 sprockets to match (£118 inc VAT/delivery) and a Tsubaki Omega gold chain (96 link) from http://www.bandcexpress.co.uk/ at about £74 inc VAT/delivery.

However, the heavy duty Tsubaki chain is a bit overkill for the 748 so next time I'd spend the extra tenner or so on a Renthal or DID gold instead as these are just as good but have smaller links and thus lighter.

Drop me a U2U if you need any more info.
