53mm vs 50mm?

You would be better off fitting later SSie forks as they are a straight swap but the better (fully adjustable) Showa units.

You will also need to check the brake calipers (40mm vs 65mm spacing) and also the axle diameter as the later ones are 25mm (like the 748) and you will either need a later front wheel or change the bearings and internal spacer. And you will also need to drive the speedo - I'm not sure if the ratios will be correct. And the correct mudguard.

I've done all this on my race bike as it was a 600SS and I went to the later Showa forks. If you have/buy all the right parts it's just a case of fitting it all together so it's not complicated.
