916 strange starting problem

My 916 has developed a slight problem.....After a ride out it will not start of the button, only bump starting will get it going.
The next day the starter button will work again.
Any ideas...starter motor relay ???

Bit confused....

so before a ride out... e.g when it's been in the garage, does it work OK ?

Sounds very much like it. Could be that the relay connectors are a bit corroded and marginal, so that any vibration or heat causes the relay not to work, or it could be the relay itself is intermittent...

Before you replace the solenoid, check the small white connector that pushes into the back of it. These are notoriuos for playing up and exhibit the symptoms you have.
You can close the terminals in it a little with a small screwdriver or such like. so they grip a little better on the pins in the solenoid. When you refit it, pass a small cable tie between the two wires and around the solenoid to hold it in place.
