a funny thing happened...

...last night. Well it wasn't that funny - I broke down. Battery wasn't being charged so went flat and I conked out. Yet to investigate the problem, but I suspect the RR. Anyway, yesterday was July 11 and I'm 38, and my speedo reading is 38711. Spooky.

If you had actually been 38 yesterday, that would have been especially spooky. I take it you were 38 already?? I like seeing significant numbers on my speedo. I saw 11111 on the Monster not long ago. What's the 'RR' ?

mine did the same last sat, turned out to be a couple of wires from the rr to alternator became exposed and earthed touching the engine, may be worth checking before you fork out.

Yes, I was 38 already. That would've been nuts.

I've had a quick look and see no evidence of blown fuses, bad connections, charring, mice, etc. I'll do some tests over the weekend. I know that the battery voltage is not rising at all when the engine's running.

I've always been amazed at how weedy the ground connection on the regulator is, especially when the fixing bolt screws into a rubber well-nut (or used to on my 92). I changed mine ages ago and fitted a nut & washer between the backplate and wellnut to ensure the ground connction is good even when the regulator wobbles about on the rubber mount. I reckon that's where most regulator 'failures' occur...it's just not a good enough long term bond for carrying a few tens of Amps of return current. Unless I'm missing something, and if I am then shame on me - I'm supposed to be an electronics engineer.
