Two 900 -1000SS questions

Hello all .

I see the 2002 900SS used a 5.5 inch rear wheel with a 170/17 tire yet the 2003 and up 1000DS " SS " uses a 180/17 tire .

Is the swingarm different between the two bikes or will the 2002 900SS take a 180 rear tire ? Does the 2003 and up 1000SS use a wider wheel than 5.5 ?

Also , is there an internal dimension/size difference between the two bikes exhaust header and lastly , will a 2003 and up 1000DS fit and work in a 2002 900SS frame along with it's throttle body and electronics ?

I ask because I have found a great deal on a 2002 900S and would like to change it a bit if I buy it

Thanks in advance for any info you can give

Not sure about the swingarm - it's possible but I doubt it. I think they would have kept it the same seeing as the model isn't their flagship range. The rear wheel on the 1000DS is still a 5.5 inch wheel. I'd suggest you'll be fine putting a 180 rear on a 900SS which will give you more tyre choice I reckon. Someone with an SS will be along shortly to confirm.

I can't help with the rest of this - maybe one of the SS people can help you out.

In the meantime - welcome to the club

I'll have a large latte if you're buying - ta.

The 2002 900ss will take a 180/55 tyre. Can't answer your other questions but I'd be surprised if you couldn't swao the motors.

I think the answers are:

Swingarm is bound to be the same, Ducati are cheap like that. UK SSs have always run 180s on 5.5in rim (I had 180/70 Dragons on my '92 900).

I would also imagine the 900 and 1000 frames are near identical. I'm looking to drop a 1000ss engine in my superlight in the future, and so far have assumed it'll slot straight into the '96 frame.

If in doubt, contact the specs master:

Cheers and good luck,

I would think a 180/55 will work, but you may or may not have some clearance issues with the rear hugger depending on tire manufacturer. A 170 and a 180 will normally fit a 5.5 rear rim.

While the ID of the headers may be the same between 900 and 1000 engines, note that the headers on the 1000DS are different to accomodate the heads on the 1000 engine which were re-designed from the 900. So, I doubt the hearders would be a simple bolt on.
