My speedo has a redline at 55mph like American models do for the ludicrous stateside speed limits.

Does this mean its an American model, even though it was supplied new by a UK Ducati dealer.

Other Dukes of a similar vintage i've had, didn't have the 55mph marking.

Not an earth shattering enquiry but has always puzzled me

...my '99 748BP had 55mph marked specifically (not red line though) and that was an ex-Ducati UK bike.

My '99 SPS also has the 55mph marking in smaller font between 50 and 60 (funnily enough?!) but, again, no red line.

Looks like they all have it marked one way or another?

I think they all have it. My 2001 748 has 55 printed in red. From memory I can't remember whether there's an actual line, but I'm sure the text is red.

I have the "55" marking on mt 748 to. It's just a parts bin thing I guess.
I'm not sure that the US even got the SPS model? Emissions thing I think.

Ducati only seem to do 2 speedos - KmPH and MPH.

All the MPH ones I've ever seen have the 55 marked on it, and no KMPH markings on them either - this is really annoying when you go abroad as I've never any clue how fast I'm going and I know that MPH is faster than the same figure in KMPH

Again, all the KMPH ones I've seen don't have MPH markings on them either.

I guess this is to standardise their output of dial faces. It doesn't make any difference to us in the UK if 55mph is marked (it just looks weird) but they can use the same speedo for different countries.

My st4 of 2000 vintage just had mph and no kph, but no 55mph marking

St4s year 2001 had mph and kph but again no 55mph marking.

But as a few of you have the 55mph marking i'll just put this down to good old Italian character.

Simple question solved very quickly.

The MPH only speedo is just a Ducati quirk, It "should" have KMH on as well to be homologated for UK use but the powers that be missed it?? Probably too busy admiring the timeless design!!! etc.

Newer bikes do have combined mph/kmh speedo's.

Yep it is annoying for trips abroad, you either have to convert in yer head 62 mph = 100 kmh, stick some sort of markers on yer speedo or do as Monty does and wait till the the carabinieri tell you how fast you are going!!

I had an import RVF before the 748 and it only had KPH on it. It's a real pain getting used to one then switching to the opposite with ONLY MPH on it!

I expect the authorities missed the no KPH on it because of the limited number of Ducatis that get brought into the country - I'm sure there are relaxed rules if you only bring under a certain number of vehicles in.

All UK bikes after 1984 should have both mph and kph markings.

Don't blame us Yanks for the 55 mph markings, we repealed the national 55 mph speed limit in 1995. Italians.
