So what about the fact that Michel was a cheat ....

or does that not count ?

Or is that acceptable gamesmanship ...

Me might have been a great driver but never a great sportsman ...

PS yes, I have met him and he's a nice guy in real life .....

As a bloke - yes. As a driver, I agree with the original post, he's a far better driver than I will ever be - anyone at that level is, and Hill was undoubtedly very quick over a single qualifying lap, but he's just not up there with the top drivers - every so often someone comes along who is in a different league to everybody else - Senna, Schumacher... Rossi...

Nobody mentions Kenny Roberts Jr as in the same league as Rossi - but he won a world title, but we're all agreed that Rossi is a genius, and Roberts Jr isn't. Same with Schumacher and Hill IMHO

Damon said he was a brilliant driver but that his winning all the time was bad for the sport. Too right it was. It's become a boring procession which I, my family and many of my friends have stopped watching.

I think there are two sets of comments by Hill on the BBC website now - no-one can disagree with his statement above, but it's hardly Schumacher or Ferrari's fault for doing a better job than the others - same as it's not Rossi/Yamaha's fault for doing a better job than the others in GP

As for the comments that Schumcher changed what was acceptible in F1 - that's nonsense - Prost and Senna started that in the late 80s when they decided it was ok to take each other out (even as teammates) in order to stop the other one winning...

If you want real racing watch a Grand Prix race from the seventies or modern bike racing. People actually overtake each other time after time and you get wheel to wheel racing, Wow!

Now then Mav;

That's what I call sticking to the FACTS!!!!!

Good God... that makes yr spine tingle just watchin it... thanks for postin that
link.
Those days were a bit before my time but from what i've heard it was'nt just
the racing that was better but the whole scene... alot of the drivers were real characters... big personalities like Damon's dad Graham and James Hunt etc

i'm pretty sure those drivers never had nutritionists n personal trainers, let alone
driver aids on their awsomely powerfull cars with only a rudimentry understanding of aerodynamics n rubber compounds... they were more like rockstars... Drinkin n fightin n womanisin n then racing the next day...

All alot more dangerous i know but thats the point is'nt it?

Wrightly or wrongly its more exciting to watch poeple taking bigger risks!

Am i romanticising it all?
