How far does XP get before the errors appear?

On switching on keep tapping the f8 key, it should then give you the option to start windows in "safe" mode. Try that.
If you do get windows to boot up the easiest option is to run a system restore which can be found in accesories/system tools on the program menu.

Put your original XP CD into the cd drive then reset your PC.

XP discs are "bootable" so it should startup off that rather than your corrupt hard-drive and be able to restore the bits that are missing.

Don't forget that you'll need to run Windows Update again once you've done this (Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Windows Update)
