I want to know what the difference is, from anyone who has actual experience, what the real difference is between a 748bip and a 748R
No doubt this also goes for say, the 996bip -"v" 996R.
I appreciate that from about '01 the shocks were Ohlins and not Showa, but I want the low-down on how things differ from a riding angle.
Any thoughts on the s, sp, sps?
I have read some of the bumf, but since I have a test ride on a 748R on Wednesday "v" a 748bip at On-Yer-Bike I want to know what you guys have to offer up.
Who knows - maybe I should book a place in the fast group at the DSC day!
I hadf a 2002 748r and my mate had a 2001 748s. When we accelerated from a rolling start together, there was very little difference. At jhp dyno i had 113bhp he had 106.
If any thing my R was more difficult to ride at low speed, although the looks kind of made up for it??
Ride the Bip first, then you will feel the difference especially if its an 02 R
My observations are:
Lighter wheels and discs with a 60 profile front tyre means the R changes direction with far less effort, feels a lot more 'flickable' as soon as you get on it.
4 pad brakes superb, two fingers only.
Ohlins all round make for a far more refined ride and are noticeably less 'harsh' than the Showas.
Engine wise the R is not as smooth as the bip but revs out far quicker so feels faster, does occasionally stall when left on the over-run before coming to a stop, blipping the throttle prevents the stalling.
Slipper clutch is great fun when coming down through the gears with loads of front brake on.
Its not an easy rider bike by any means and really feels at its best when 'going some'
If, its 02 with smooth sided fairings, then its the best looking duke ever!!!
Those dyno figures look a little optomistic don't they? As far as I am aware the bip and S have the same engine. If that is the case, why is my bip dynoed at 85? This figure is waht the dyno fellow predicted before we started too, and correlated with his records of other 748 / 916 bikes. Not one of them made over 100!
Are you talking rear wheel or crank? I think you are rear wheel, and me mates and mine were corrected crank... if you dont believe ask Mr Hackett himself!
My 748r was dyno'd after the usual "it wont run very well!" JHP chip sorted it.
Thank god for more perameters being measured on the 749/999 range.. oh and Power Commander (in the future)
Oh and dont forget the dyno is only as good as the Operative... and their interpretation. I do believe Mr H is at the front of the believe list aswell.
The dyno I had mine tested on is measured at the rear wheel, why would you measure anywhere else to be honest? I have graphs for it plus fuelling somewhere. I have always been a tad sceptical of bhp figures as different dynos produce different figures so as a general forum it's numpty territory. However: Where it does have it uses is if you're tuning a bike and you want to see how it is performing. As long as you use the same equipment, same set up, same everything then over time this will give a bigger picture of what is not right with a system / fuelling / etc. Beyond that, the figures are absolutely meaningless especially dyno-ing on bikes such as V twins as I gather it can be counter-productive, can't tell you the tech details but it can "back fire" on you! Perhaps someone with the inside track will let us know.
So as far as I am concerned I have a 200kg bike producing 85 bhp. Maybe that's why I am soooooooooo slow!
