Remember that the output ratios (the bit that drives the front sprocket) are different between the monster engine and the SS engine, so the gearing will be quite different between the two.

IIRC, the monster uses a lot lower gearing (bigger rear sprocket) compared to the SS engines.

We do have 2 x 14's, but will prob need both - AK thinks he might have another somewhere, will look later for anyone who is desperate??

What are you going to do...run 14 / 14 gearing?

Primary (crank-to-clutch) gearing in all the 600 engines changed during '94 to be the same as the 750's ie 2:1.
(There are vin numbers associated with it, but I dont have then to hand)
They changed the final drive gearing at the same time to keep the overall ratio the same, so a 600SS with 2:1 primary has a 15/41 rear sprocket set as standard.
Monsters all have more teeth on the rear sprocket than the equivalent size SS.
From memory, I think the 600mon with 2:1 primary has 15/43 on the rear.

Chain links come in different sizes, so you need to match your chain to your sprockets (or vice versa) to ensure they all work together correctly.

There are various different dimensions to consider - chain pitch (the distance between the rollers), chain width (distance between side plates) and the roller size being but three of them.
http://www.sh-weiya.com/product/2_2/2_2_12/1/motoc2.gif[/img]

For a 520 chain, the pitch (p) is 15.875mm, width (w) is 6.25mm and the roller distance (Dr) is 10.16mm

For a 525 chain, the pitch (p) is 15.875mm, width (w) is 7.75mm and the roller distance (Dr) is 10.16mm

So while 520 and 525 chains are very similar, it's the distance between the sideplates which differs, so you need thicker sprockets - a 525 chain usually goes on more powerful machines.

Ducati use 525 chains on all their current models for economy and standardisation. The 748 (except the R) has a 520 chain and the 916+ have a 525 chain. I believe the 600 line also had a 520 chain as standard, but it should be stamped on the side plates to tell you what it is.

The reason for using a 520 chain over a 525 is that a 520 chain will be lighter than the same size 525 chain, and with therefore reduce the amount of power taken by the drivechain (as a heavier chain will take more effort to move by the engine) giving you more power at the back wheel. Ok, so we're only talking hundredths of bhp here, but every little helps

I'm MUCH more informed now....NOT!

A 520 sprocket will _fit_ into a 525 chain, but you really dont want to do it !

As I said up there ^^^ the 748 range (except the R I believe) all came with a 520 chain - mine certainly did - so there's no reason not to ask for a 14t from a 748 from a dealer, then check it's a 520 sprocket.
