The fuse has melted and welded one of the blades inside the fuse holder. The bike has never been wet so there is no corrosion. Still trying to get the bit out of the holder so I can fit another fuse and see if it will start.

My 916 had the same although not as bad fuse as yours, i found that out at the side of the road, after the bike had cut out, turned out to be the the regulator/rectifer wiring was in a poor way, since having the wiring sorted, i've found no futher problems.

Turns out the 1997 bikes only had one 15amp fuse fitted the later bikes had one 5amp and one 20 amp fuse. Mine just has the single 15amp. Well thats that sorted. The regulator is suspect so that could explain what happened.
