info on different models

having decided on a 748...can someone give me a heads up on the different suffixes (?) they come with please? i.e...748E, S, etc...what are the differences?

OK, I'll start it off with my limited knowledge .... but, someone much more knowledgeble than me will be along soon.

748R - full on ohlins model, race spec, etc
748S - slightly tweaked motor with a few goodies on it
748BP - base model with twin seat
748mono - base model single seat

748E - basic model about 2002 or 2003. Low spec suspension, no dzuz fasteners. Seemed to be built to a price. No offence to any 748e owners ... it's still a Ducati

Engine output etc will have changed between models and probably increased with time.

Pre 2001 - gold frame and wheels
Post 2001 - grey frame and wheels

Post 1997 (ish) - Jap electrics, helped cure a lot of the electrical issues.

My first Ducati was a 1997 748BP, that I converted to Mono, with carbon termi's. Loved the bike. Had it for 2 years and apart from a throttle cable that snapped I only had to pay for services and tyres.

Ref your other thread, half the stuff on services you can do yourself if you're mildly competent with basic mechanics. No need for 2000 mile oil changes unless that's all you do every year. 6000/yrly service or 12,000/2 yrly service. As mentioned price will vary according to dealerships or independant specialists, price will depend any on work found during routine checks on these services, sometimes the work needs doing;valve clearances, pads, adjustments others not. BUT do not skimp by taking it to anyone other than a recognised specialist (plenty of mentions of them on this site) it will cost you more in the long run.
As for the suffixes, basically E/BP base model base spec, S (mono or with twin seat) higher spec (suspension , wheels, head angle adjustment) , SP/SPS/R homologation specials, for entry into supersport where the formula restrictions are tight. As said that is basically it, they are all good bikes worthy of buying, but obviously there is a price premium attached to each. Any help?

you guys are STARS!!! thanks....EXACTLY the info i needed to get the best i can. luckily i live in Lincoln so have Italia Moto (formerly italia classics..well known) on my doorstep, in fact thats who i bought my 900ss from last year.

Quick tip if I may - although I own a late R, unless you're a hoon go for a late 748S, beautiful looking, well endowed () and very rider friendly. But that's just my view, others may contest.
JUST MAKE SURE IT'S YELLOW!!!!!

I have a 2001 Y reg 748s and second the advice from raykay748R. But whichever you decide on, hey, it's still a Ducati you are riding!
