Standard coil for 748/996 new £60
Standard DS coil new £16
Will the DS on work instead of the Single spark by just using one lead?

Probably not. but i bet the identical fiat punto coils are cheaper

Yeah they are Kev about 8 quid but the picture shows them as DS

or do they need to be NEW if so
Be worth trying a DS one but suspect they work as a push-pull coil so may work if you earth one of the HT outputs
