Riding tips 2 ....... Foggy EUROPEAN Director of the California Superbike School, Andy lbbott, has advice to improve your riding... THE PROBLEM RIDING in fog is one of the least enjoyable things you can do on a bike. The lack of visibility shatters your confidence - as well as not being able to see other road users, they can't see you. Freezing fog is even worse. Breathing hard causes your visor to mist up and, when dark, you must ensure you keep your lights on a dipped beam to avoid glare. THE SOLUTION FIRSTLY ensure you can see as well as possible. An anti-fog insert such a Fog City is a huge benefit. Also keep your visor as clean as possible. Hake sure people can see you. Reflective clothes such as a Sam Browne belt or overjacket might not look cool, but could save your life. Road position is crucial. In thick fog stay three-quarters of the way to the middle line to avoid potential hazards: To see and to be seen. The centre line is a good indicator of what's approaching. If lines are long with a short gap there is a hazard ahead. If lines are short and have a large gap it indicates there are no hazards such as tight bends ahead. Finally, slow down to allow you time - and distance - to stop if you do see something. Foggy Frank |
