The main differance is in the riding position. There is so much room in the seating area that it can take a while to find your "groove".The seat is'nt so high up,so initially it feels like the bikes fairing nose is too high and in your face. You soon get used to it tho.The handling/brakes are excellent and stuff like the clocks are much better on the newer bikes.A 749 will not have the same "raw" feeling as the 748,and the bikes are generally a lot quieter.Things change tho by bolting on a Termi system which gives the bike its growl back.
Test rides should be available at your local Ducati dealer.
Which 749 were you thinking of?

Hi,swopped my '00 748r for a brand new 749dark back in October.Haven't really looked back since. The 'R' was a great bike but the 749's a lot more comfy, easier to commute on plus you can see where you're going in the night!!
Wasn't a huge fan of the new shape initially but seeing one in black, the colour really suited the shape so i bought it!
Test rode a 749s and it felt as quick as my 50mm Termied,JHP chipped, serviced by Nelly, 'R',only a lot easier to throw around.
The 749/999 series feel a lot lighter on the road than my 'R' did.
I went to the dealers with an open mind as to buying one and after the test ride,i did a deal.Riding the 'R' back home,it felt quite old compared to the 749.
Finally take a test ride,i don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yep, I agree with all of the above. I test rode a 749S and 748R on the same day and ended up buying the 749S. The newer bike was much easier to ride and felt solid on the road. The 748R, with it's higher riding position, felt a bit too much like my current bike at the time (Aprilia RSV) - a bit top heavy and very on/off. The 749S was much smoother and easier to ride fast. I am AT LEAST 5-10mph quicker through every corner on the road on the 749S, and much quicker in the wet.

The 749 is the better bike for the majority of people.

I dont think you will be dissapointed with the 749, I have both and they are both totally different in riding position, after riding the 748 for so long and getting on the 749 the seat takes some getting used to.
definately needs the open clutch cover and cans on the bike cos they are definately too quiet.
go on a test drive one for atleast an hour and make your own mind up.

yeha I know, can't belive the power that JHP is getting out of a baby R!!

Mine isn't standard and pumps out around 120bhp at the rear, but I like the lazy torque to be honest. Great to ride.
