Help with Avatars...

OK, decided it's time to get an avatar thingy... so I went to the FAQ bit on it, and it's easy enough... but, when I resize my piccie to 155pixels wide it looses all the quality out of it...
Piccied started life as a 1280x1024, what's the best way of reducing the size of it without losing the quality or what am I doing wrong??

Cheers
Martin
