Replacement engine for 93 900SS....

I've got a well used and highly modded engine which is now beginning to get to the stage where it's basically getting knackered.....
I love to keep the bike and was wondering whether any of the later Ducati 2V air-cooled engines would fit my current frame without too many problems.
So if I ditch the old lump, what can I sensibly replace it with ??

The new 1000 DS would be nice....

Jools,

'Tis tempting nonetheless.....
....however I'd like to definitively know it'll fit before I make a decision.

I, and many others, have successfully transplanted a 620 (FI) engine into a 600 frame. Given that (most of) the 2V engines have the same mounting points, you've got plenty to choose from!

Clicky the linky below for more info on the 600/620 hybrid.

If it's got all the right mods (big-bore, FCRscrbs, etc), why not get it rebuilt and blueprinted?

The cost will probably be more than a second-hand engine but you are essentially getting a new engine (and the old one would be worth pretty much nothing unless it was reconditioned anyway).

Basically my old engine spec is as follows...

Gas flowed heads (Mez Porting)
FCR carbs (39mm)
Big bore kit (944 cm3)
High comp pistons
Dual oil cooler (Baines mod)
Lightened flywheel

It goes OK, but the plugs keep fouling so it needs a rebore and new rings, but it's as large as it goes. So as a minimum I would need two "new" cyclinder blocks which would need reboring.

The reasons to change are mainly that I want an engine with less hassle but still with character and plenty of get up and go....and as I already have a Multistrada I know that the 1000DS engine would fit the bill.

Do you have any idea of what sort of power it was making before the downhill slide...?

Probably about the middish 80s....I never got it dyno'd so I can't quote exact figures. I do know that when it's on song it's lovely to ride the torque band and still have a bit of get up and go towards the top too. The engine isn't that bad at the moment, I just ahve to keep cleaning plugs....

I'm popping into Baines to have a word with Geoff/John as to the best way forward with the bike. I must just bite the bullet and sell the two Dukes, get an S2R 1000 and start playing again from there......I even hear you can get a big-bore kit for the 1000DS engine......now that would be fun ....
