996sps exhaust pipe sizes.

Hi,

What to know if there would be any performance loss with a 996sps using 45mm header pipes. Then a 50mm cross over pipe and 50mm exhaust cans?

I know that as standard, the 996sps comes with a 50mm system from end to end. I have read somewhere that with a standard 996 sps engine, it is slightly over piped on the headers any how. I was thinking that the 45mm headers may give it a little bit more feel etc, lower in the revs?

Any advice,views would be cool.

Being honest, I dont want to buy another exhaust cos Im being tight at the moment.

Ta,

DC.

Looks like no one knows, all i can say is my SPS with standard 50 mm system never felt lacking low down or in the midrange, if fact it was better in the midrange than my 'stretta engine.

i suppose the only way to find out is to try it with the 45mm and see how it feels.

If you go to the Sigma website you will find the favoured pipe for a sorted 996SPS is the 54mm system off of the 748RS, quite a bit of info on their website and probably some on the http://moto-one.com.au/performance/ website

Cheers chaps,

I have done a bit of reading up about engine specs and pipe sizes.
I cant remember where I read it but somewhere, it stated that with a standard 996SPS lump, it was thought that the 50mm headers were slightly too big. Im sure that with me riding the bike with the 50mm system, I would be unable to tell the difference between 45mm and 50mm.

I am sure that if a 996sps engine was tweaked then it would need a bigger (54mm ??) Anyhow...............................

Ok chaps, thanks for the help. Im just gonna have to ride it and see sometime in the spring when its all finished.

Garry Smith spent this year racing his 996SPS engined race bike with a full 50mm system, but he will be changing to a 54mm system for next year (when he comes and gives me the money for it) I got the impression from him that he feels the 50mm setup may be restricting the top end performance.
Hard for me to tell as my 996Bp is running a full 54mm system which I can't fault, where asmy 998 Hybrid seems happy enough with its full 50mm system..
Note a 748R runs a 50mm system as standard and a 748RS runs a 54mm system as standard which makes me thing that 45mm headers and manifolds may be a bit restrictive on a 996.

cheers skidlids,

I think that im gonna run the 996sps with the 45mm headers and the 50mm cross over and exhaust cans.
Try it and see how it goes. I will keep my eyes open for a set of 50mm headers and cross over pipe.

Did the 996Bp come with 45mm headers as standard?

I know the early 996Bips came with 45mm systems but I thought I heard somewhere that later ones came with a 50mm system

I did have a 1998 748bp with 45mm termi's and when I asked about going up to 50mm system I was told they were not really suitable for a standard machine.

Not sure about 996 and 50mm system .... would guess they are suited.
