Strada EPROM
Hi Guys,

I opened the covers on my stock Strada 888 (P7 processor) to check there was no water damage and all looks fine. However, I was somewhat surprised to find the EPROM has a SPO sticker on it. I assumed this was a US market only model with (I assume) leaner settings. Its a paper sticker (no manufacturer marks) that lists "888SPO 1993 -039-". Can anyone confirm if that is what should be fitted?

Thanks,

Keith

According to the FIM website the standard Eprom for the 1993 888 Strada is 038 but further down it shows the 039 as the Italy version.....
See here, click on Eproms

Thanks Andy. Sounds like it is definately the original chip. If the 039 is the EPROM fitted for the italian market then I doubt it is in anyway restrictive

I'm still a little confused. The FIM website seems to indicate that the 888 was fitted with the same (038 or 039) EPROM regardless of which ECU (P7 or P8) was fitted. If that is correct then does that mean that the big improvement in fuelling that the road test articles attribute to the P8 is actually down the revised EPROM that was first fitted to the P7 in the 888?

Isn’t the 039 fitment for the SP4 Keith? Also any Ducati guru’s I have spoken to advize to leave the P7 as is, and there is also an issue with the fuel regulator if you change over from the P7 to the P8. Cannot see where any performance increase would come from by fitting the P8 ECU???

Weber-Marelli IAW P7 ECU
851, 907 and early 888's up to serial number 000508.

Weber-Marelli IAW P8 ECU
Later 888's from serial number 000509, 916 Strada, 916SP, 916SPS, 996SPS

The basic reason that the P8 has better performance is that the two cylinders can be fueled independently and differently to compensate for combustion chamber temperature differences caused by a reduced airflow pattern across the vertical cylinder. Consequently, P7s can't use the EPROM's rear cylinder fuel offset map.

Shazaam.....I thought that only the SP888 models used the dual mapping function of the P8? If so, I'm still confused why the road tests of the era claimed the P8 was a big improvement over the P7 if the 888 Strada was using the same fuel map in both P7 and P8 ECUs?

Charlie...I have seen the -039- chip listed as for the Italian market in two separate places. Plus my -039- chip also clearly states SPO on it.

Thanks for that Shazaam, not sure I follow clearly though, “fuelling independently” i.e. as a base/manual adjustment for optimization on a rolling road or has the P8 the capability to adjust fuel and ignition settings under varied operating conditions on the open road? Just a thought even the fuel these eproms were mapped on is not available nowadays, hard to get a feel for what’s going on.
Fair questions Keith, and then there are the Corsa, Fast by Ferracci .etc etc. eproms options!....I know not!
