I thought the 998S has the 996R engine without the titanium ?If so then the S would have MORE power than the R

I think you'll find that the 998R has the same engine as the early 999R. An extra 1cc but a shorter stroke and an extra 3 bhp over the 998S. Although the 998S is supposed to be the same as the 996R if you're a saddo anorak (like me) you'll find the in the original Ducati bumf the 996R claimed 135 bhp and the less exotic 998S claimed a whole extra horse at 136 bhp.

Must get back to reading my telephone directories.

Having been in the very lucky position to have owned a 996R and now a 998R i will say that the 996R had a claimed 136bhp.According to Ducati that was.
The 998R has a claimed 139bhp.
Well in standard trim that is.Some of them have a whole lot more.

The 996R was 998cc. The first testastretta engine. A crackin engine and was the basis of the 998's when they replaced the 996's. That engine, although with conventional and deep sumps, went in the 998's and is still used in the 999's in one form or another.

The 998R engine is the daddy. It runs 104mm bore and a very short stroke, can't remember the figures but i think it's shorter than a 748, and gives 999cc's. It's also used in 999R. Only those two bikes use it. It's the basis for homoglating the WSB engine.
The large bore and short stroke make for a very lively motor and hold the potential for serious bhp. Although only quoted a few bhp up on the 998s with a bit of fettling there are good gains to be had. With a lot of fettling you could pole top 6 on the WSB grid

My favorite techy bit is the head gasket............. there isn't really one. 9 o-rings seal the oil and water channels and a single, endless alloy ring seals the cylinder. Don't go playing unless you are serious though. Those alloy rings are £132 each. Yep. Pull the heads and you need £260 straight away, before you even think about what work you're going to do on the engine....................

I have 150bhp.152 to be precise.
Mind you this has cost me a lot of money and time over the years to get.

I will also be the first to admit that this is wasted on me.

In standard trim it is more than enough.

Like Nelly says though.A strip down of the engine alone is a lot of money.Never mind the cost of any modifications you are going to do.

I also like the fact that the 998R has wider timing belts than the others. So how trick do you think the 998s is.??
