996 Tachometer Problem

I am having to replace the clocks on my '99 996 SPS because of crash damage. I have recently bought a replacement set of clocks from ebay which look in great condition, everything works apart from the tachometer. The seller insists they were working when they came off his bike and I am lost as to why they will not work. I have changed the wiring loom off my old clocks to replace and I still cant get tachometer to work. I know bike loom works because old clocks still work and register despite damage.

The clocks I have bought did not come from 996. Are there different tachometers or circuit boards inside Ducati clocks which may cause this problem?

I've used tachos from 748's on 996's, but always from bikes with the same 1.6M ECU. I believe your bike has the P8 ECU, so if the replacement instrument came off a 1.6M bike (very likely), that may indeed be the issue.

Thanks Injected, very useful information. Where can I find out which bikes have 1.6M ECU and which have P8 ECU so I can track down the right tacho?

P8s can be found on the
916 Strada (single injector)
916SP
916SPS
996SPS
also on Corse 955

888 also used the P8 but probably had a different design of tacho
