Call me a picky but the OE rear sprocket coating has started to corrode making it look very scruffy so im thinking of replacing it.

My 998s has done 5500 miles so can I just change the sprocket or do I also have to replace the chain as well.

I used to race mountain bikes many moons ago and with bikes it was always necessary to replace the sprocket and chain at the same time because as the chain wears, the distance between the links increases and this wears the sprocket. If you just replace the sprocket or the chain the two dont bed together and the chain slips.

Is this the same with motorbikes ?

Which make of sprocket is best (Renthal, Afam etc)

I looked in the Deman Tweeks catalogue and it states that I need to buy a sprocket carrier (£120 odd quid) as well for the 998s/996r. Is this correct or am I getting confused with quick release spockets ?

Its the same with motorbikes, but infintely more so due to the much higher forces that come into play

If you are replacing chains and sprockets I think a top tip is to go 1 tooth less on the front sprocket to give more acceleration and a little less top end. The gearing is pretty tall, particularlt top. I did this on my 916 and it was a real improvement.

Weeksy, thanks for the heads up re: sprocket carrier.
I've just ordered one with 37 tooth sprocket and new set of cush drives.
First time i've dealt with AJRacing but he sounds very knowledgeable and a thoroughly decent lad to deal with.

Recommended.

One thing though.
I too was under the impression Renthal sprox would fit the £60 carrier but they do not.
However, he stocks the sprockets that do fit and they're priced at £18 + vat - cheaper than Renthal anyway!
