With all this hot weather playing havoc with the bike in traffic, I wondered if fitting an oil cooler to the 748, like those on the 916 derivitives, would have any effect.

Anyone done this? How easy is it to do? Is it merely a case of removing some blanking plugs and adding the oil cooler, then topping up the system, or do I need more than that like an uprated oil pump or something?

It's easy PROVIDING you have the brackets on the front of the forward rocker coverSimple to fit.

I fitted an oil cooler to my 748 a few years back.
Parts required:
Oil cooler
Hoses
"Spring Plate" that fits between the oil filter and the crankcase (this directs the oil into the cooler - without it the cooler doesn't work. Costs about a fiver)
Crankcase pickup/return fittings.

Also, need to re-route the oil return line tfrom the existing rear head line to pick up on the cooler rather than back to the crankcase. The end fitting should be changed to do this but I managed to reuse the crankcase fittings and get it to mate with the cooler.

I think it is a good modification and not too expesive if you can get a second hand oil cooler.

I did mine this year it is easy to do as long as you get all the correct parts, remember you will need the correct spring plate and rocker cover to mount the coooler on.

I seem to remember a tread on this topic some time back. I don't recall who made the remark but it seem's that the bike will run hotter with an oil cooler. It was put down to the fact that with the oil cooler in place, this restricted the amount of cool air being feed to the front cylinder.
