The factory wne through all this in it's search for the right rim width and tire combination. The 180 w/ 5.5 worked best for most riders.

Plus I use a 120 with metal studs when it snows usually.

Fred its best to use chains in icey wether. use an old set of wheels though.

I think it is important to add that if using a 190 you should use a 190/55 not 50
its much much better
