Self service

Who does there own service and to what extent and how often.
I think its expensive to have your bike serviced by a dealer I know its good to have a full dealer service history but some people like my self can not afford that luxury.

I haven't had my 800ss' long but, I generally do everything except valve clearances. I might start doing them though - even though one of the bikes is under warranty still.

I have always serviced both my bikes and cars - I am way too tight to pay anyone to do a job that I can at least have a go at myself.

I am not a mechanic but have built up some expertise over the years, mainly on Range Rovers that I use on Desert expeditions.

In comparison to working on cars I have always found the bikes much simpler and they generally seem to be more reliable.

The one thing that I have never been any good at is tuning, I can get 90% there but the last bit that make the engine run sweetly seems to elude me, so I tend to get someone else to do it.

I say crack on, get a manual or search the net, - there are loads of good sites - and have a bash it, as long as one is methodical there is a limit to what can go wrong - FAMOUS LAST WORDS!!
