oil in air box?

just been to have a look at a carby SS 900 bit scruffy but that is reflected in the price- was keen to buy until i noticed oil on the inside of the fairing ( left hand side) there was no apparent oil leak on the engine - when i lifted the tank to peek in the air box there was a small pool of oil/water/petrol around the airbox drain!! this has obviously leaked onto the fairing causing the oil stain that i noticed on the inside of the fairing-

what would cause this blow back of oil and petrol into the airbox?????????
is it a case of blocked breather tubes or something a bit more serious???????

any suggestions?

Could be the rings/barrells worn giving a bit of blow by, causing part of the compression stroke to pressurise the crank cases.

What sort of money is it as I know of a couple of decent 900SS that may well be for sale in the sping

Oil in the airbox may be from the crankcase breather through the crankcase oil boxes (Little plastic jobbies under the seat) and then into the airbox! If it has never been cleaned out then thats where that has come from!

As for the water is it a build up of condensation? Has it been kept out side? Has it got an open air box? All of these maybe causes!

As for the petrol is it just the seperation of oil/water mix, it will smell of petrol any how!

Hope this helps, im sure someone with a more technical mind will give you another reason/solution!

Yorkie.

If it was a bargain id clean it and observe!

At that price its probably worth going for it especially when you factor in the Ohlins and if it has reasonable compression.

Now that people like Jim at Bike Enders have things like 1000DS engines for sale as well as earlier engines you could do it up over a period of time and get a fair few years enjoyment and service from it

Skidlids is probably right in his opinion on the problem. It sounds like the bike has not been looked after and may well turn out to be a money pit. This is the right place to find a tidy one. If I was you I would walk away and don't look back.
