Dry Clutches

I am fairly new to ducati's and have a 1000 DS SS.

I have a few questions regarding the dry clutch.
1. I know it is normal for them to be noisy, but can they be made to be quiet(er)?
2. How long do they last?
3. I have seen open type clutch covers and they look very trick. I would like to fit one but.... does it have any downsides eg clutch slipping in the rain or very dusty...

Thanks in advance for your advice
Rich

Mood: the rain in spain falls mainly on me!
they are made quieter by ducati by having a full casing put on them.

they really should be run with an open casing as it will keep it cooler also get rid of all the dust.

it will obviously be noisier but that is part of the ducati 'charm' and as you say does make them look very trick.

No they can't be made to be quieter, when you take of the clutch cover you will see why ,with all the teeth and cut outs chatting together. My 99/900SS clutch was changed at 10,000 because I thought it was noisy, had a new one fitted and with in a 100 miles sounded like before. Done 12,000 since on this one and although noisy no problems with it ,my 996 has 16,000 miles on the clock and still on the original. Change then when they start to slip or if you hear any metalic plate to plate noises.Costs about £180 to have replaces unless you do it youself. As Dickiduke said Open Cover are fine, but all that dust gets else where and I found my boots covered in dust some times. 4D
