Question Flaky paint retouch.

Looking at pulling the engine out this autumn to repaint the frame. So while the engine is sitting there was going to attack the flaky paint. Has anyone stripped the old and applied new paint, without stripping the engine down? What have you used as your preferred method? What tools did you use? How did you do it? whould you do it differently to the method you used ? and WHY??? Not after a pristine concours type finnish but just a non flaky refresh.
Your comments welcome.

Did exactly as you say with this one.Remove loose paint, feather the edges, make sure surface is perfectly clean, mask anything that doesnt need painting and use high temp paint.Scotch pads work well for cleaning/surface prep.
