Floating disc bobbins There's a bit too much play for my liking in a set of Brembo cast-iron floating discs I have. The feel at the lever just didn't feel right on a few occasions when I was out on the bike at the weekend. Is it possible to source new bobbins and clips for them? TIA. |
Hiya, I think these guys sell the kits seperately somewhere.... http://kaemna.de/cms_en/katalog.htm?...el&artikel=218 Frank |
Cheers Frank. Will investigate. |

TecMoto used to do a set of bobbins which replaced the standard ones and also turned your disks into fully floaters. I think they were STM ones at £67 a set (two disks). Don't know if they still do them or have them in stock, but could be worth a ring? |
Thanks Antoyne - these are full-floaters. Occasionally in a corner on the brakes I will get vibration from them which can be a bit unsettling. The 748 I have doesn't suffer this and it has the same discs. Braking in a straight line is mostly fine. |
Oh yes, should have read it properly! |
you can direct replacements from Brembo via GPR. Bobbins, shims and clips etc. |
Thanks Nelly - I will order some tomorrow then. |
Not 100% sure why you'd need to replace the bobbins unless they where actually worn. Shouldn't affect brake feel (e.g. Pad knock off/back) unless something else is off. maybe wheel slighty off ballance too?!? You can also get wavy washers that settle them down. rgds, Rob |
twpd: You might find that it's not the bobbins that wear but the aluminium carrier instead. The half circles in the carrier ovalise. That's what I found on my Brembo race discs. I've never found anyone selling just the carriers. |
I'll take a look at that then Felix. Thanks for the tip. I've got the whole weekend to do it - I'll just pop a spare set of discs on instead. |
I'd be interested what you find. |
I'll take them apart completely. I can measure the bobbins accurately but, I'm not sure how I will be able to check the carriers though. |
If the bobbins are still round, i.e. not deformed, then I would think that only leaves the carriers. Any "wear" either in the bobbin or the carrier is deformation of the metal. |
Ah the old shudder when brakes applied. The carrier wear is easy to check. Does the brake disk move back to frt at all? If so the carrier is warn. You need over sized bobbins machined up, or new carriers. Do not just fit new bobbins because they will be the same as the old. (They don't wear much.) If the disk moves from side to side, http://www.moto-racing.co.uk/cat--Br...sc+Spares.html These guys have what you need. I have just done a set last month. Don't for get to glue the E Clips. You need new ones, as the old ones distort on removal. Any bearing shop should have them. |
Here is a site with oversized bobins. Good old STM. http://www.manleycycle.com/stm.htm |
Your dead right Felix, brought all new bobins and shims and they still rattle forwards & back. Andy |

I seriously doubt that will work to be honest. The half holes in the disc carrier actually ovalise. Installing oversized bobbins isn't going to solve the problem. It will simply bind up the disc. What you need is a new carrier. However, my guess is that Brembo engineered this pretty well. That is this wear is an indicator that it's time to replace the entire disc. I am sure there are plenty of people who have successfully rebuilt discs, but if you get it wrong...oh dear. Not for me. |
yep your right . Half the hole gets ovalised. Machine shop time. Get the holes done in the disc and carrier. Fit oversized bobins. There is a guy in Melb that does the (whole) job. :D As for wear indicator yep. Or just crap at braking. |
