996 rear wheel nut???

If you wanna nip down to halfords and get a socket to remove the wheel, what size is the nut?

TIA

46mm off the top of me head

rcgbob44 11-Dec-2006 21:45

You have a nut on the top of your head!

doogalman 11-Dec-2006 21:46

Yup, 46mm. Normally they only have in stock the 1/2" impact version. No problem there. Best to grind the rounded bevel type edge off so you get the maximum grip. Best few quid you can spend. Don't forget the torque wrench or scaffold pole.

A 46mm one!

yeti 11-Dec-2006 22:05

46mm, and get your local machine shop to grind it down to the same height as the faces on the nut.

VanDaMauler 11-Dec-2006 22:14

cheers chaps

I strongly recommend getting a 3/4 inch drive socket and a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar. I broke/bent the following trying to remove mine:

2 x 1/2 in breaker bars, 2 (good) 1/2 in ratchets, 2 x 1/2 in tommy bars.

3/4 bar inch makes it easy.

I would doubt if Halfords will stock this size, mine didn't.
Best to go to a local tool specialist

moto748 13-Dec-2006 13:55

I bought one from Halfords, disguised as a 1 13/16" Ball Joint impact socket.

JDR 18-Dec-2006 16:11

46mm but bet your halfords wont stock one go to descent tool shop or I bought mine from Dennis Trollope racing on tel 01179570821 and buy a torque wrench at the same time

rcgbob44 18-Dec-2006 22:03

One of the best places to pick one up is on the tool stands you get at the variuos show around the country.

There`s no real need to spend a fortune on a brand name so long as its of reasonable kwolity!

I to would recomend that you get the face turned down so as to get a betteer fit against the wheel.

Excuse me for stateing the bleedin obvious but although torque wrenches are nice and long and therefore give good leverage, don't use them for loosening the nut off.

Unless you've got a decent one, that is.

The digital Snap-on is great for seeing how much over-torqued things are when undoing them!

Thats then termed breakaway torque, and has some pre - requisites you need to consider ! like ambient temp, any lubricant used on the threads etc

Paul996 10-Apr-2007 20:45

Pick my 46mm socket at one of the bike shows, with a reducer 3/4-1/2 for about £5-£7, not sure which. Also picked up the torque wrench.

Indeedy - and what a term to throw into a bike conversation at your local... although you will 'sort of' be in the right 'ballpark', breakaway torque can be a bit misleading if you want to know if something is overtorqued. Always check the temperature, humidity and greasiness of your nuts before knocking them off etc. etc.

I used to sell 46MM nuts with the faces turned down - I have one knocking around somewhere... not sure if a 1098 is the same size.

Gaz 748 10-Apr-2007 21:14

There`s a tool shop on the A30 in Camberley that sells them, can`t remember the name , but it`s down the bottom of the hill before the white elephant on the left. :D
