Brands ACU Test day with Hottrax 20th Feb 2011 4 Attachment(s) Brands ACU Test day with Hottrax 20th Feb 2011 As well as getting out on my DD bike yesterday for the first time in a few months, I also got to try out My Class B bike after first giving it a £20 run on the Enforcement Dyno and then giving it its first ever track outing. Using rather old Diablos. Wasn't quite sure what to expect as its so different from my DD race bike which is not only a 6-Speed 620 housed in a early SS chassis, it also has mods to the suspension and twin front calipers, neither of which the 583 has. Still that initial test session wasn't to bad, first changes I need to make is reposition the gear change and also lift the bike up the forks a bit. The lack of a fairing was interesting in that it felt odd not having anything in front of me so to speak. I didn't really need a Tacho to ride it on track but the Dyno guys could have done with it as Max Power was measured at 3750rpm, maybe they need to double that. Not only was the bike void of a Tacho but also their ignition pickup for the Dyno was broken. The engine is completely untouched and although carbs have a dyno-jet kit fitted its running standard air-box lid and standard paper filter. Exhaust is standard down-pipes with Hi-level Sils. Max BHP in 4th Gear Roll on was 44.9hp (SAE) with 76.7 lb/ft of torque, almost as much torque as the ZX10R that had just been on there. May have to have a play with the cam timing at some point and see if I can move the power around, bumping up the horsepower and reducing the torque. As always with these projects there’s a bit of development work needed, I’m still unsure of the single disc set-up although the OEM P4 Caliper worked well enough with the Aprilia RS125 front disc and the Monster S2R master-cylinder, but the conditions were hardly ideal for pushing any brake system to its maximum. Also got chatting with a Mini Twin rider, he was saying how he has to pay around £300 for a set of tyres if he wants to be able to compete with the guys at the front and after he was told what we paid he was wishing they had a control tyre rule. Front £120 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pirelli-120-70...em3a636 1c321 Rear £160 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pirelli-Diablo...em3a636 173d2 Felt really sorry for the lad I was sharing a garage with (No not you Ron) He had dropped his 748 off at Brands on Friday evening hoping to make the Bemsee test day on the Saturday as that’s who he races with. But due to work he couldn’t make Saturday so turned up Sunday and signed on for the Hottrax test day. Despite being on a 748 and having full wets he was wishing he were out in the Green group alongside us DD riders. Sadly he and his bike returned from the first session in the back of the recovery trailer and that was it game over for the day, as he didn’t have enough spares to repair all the damage. I asked if the conditions had caught him out and he replied his crash was down to another rider. Ells didn’t have much more luck either, finding his early modified to a larger spindle front wheel was a few mm off centre, Neal Catling offered up my later front wheel and found that also to be off centre and despite Chris Bushell heading back home and machining a couple of mm off the speedo replacement spacer and cleaning up the damaged spindle head Mark still wasn’t happy enough with it to venture out on track. |
I think there must be something wrong with the dyno Kev, as no way can a 583 give 76ft/lb Just looked at mine from last year at JHP mine is 34ft/lb and my 749 is/was 55ft/lb |
Not sure how its calculating the torque Phil but if its using the Revs which are a factor of 2 out then halving the torque figure will put it in the right Ball park |
The class b bike looks good skids, very swoopy and curvy with that nose piece. your torque does seem a bit optimistic. Lets hope it was a training day for the operator and they get there act together before we get our (read mine) top 3 bikes on it at brands  |
what I cant understand is why every other monster, even with the same seat unit, looks higher at the rear than mine?! would be interested Kev in anything you do to mod the pegs to go back further, as discused yesterday I'd like to try them further back |
Quote:
Mmm that would make more sense. ;) |
Early DD testing - takes me back to the day....... ;) ![]() ![]() And you need to get the dremel to those Endurance seat units  ......"during the war"...... :) |
Quote:
Paul I think you will find my pegs are futher back than yours, if I fit a reverse pattern lever the gear change toe peg ends up in the same place as the 916 one currently on it. I could get more adjustment by fitting set of adjustable 916 pegs, the sort where the footrest is on a cam and the plates have a couple of different mounting holes. Tim I know what you mean about the Dremel after seeing the seat that came with Dallas's bike that he bought off Jimbers |
Quote:
She didn't stay that pretty for long if my memory serves me;) |
Sadly, they rarely do :sniff: |
well I've chopped it down Tim....bit more extreme than yours tho  how did you find the single disc set up? Looks like a brembo radial fitted on there....16mm??? |
The single disk setup worked fine, I'm pretty sure it was the Brembo 16x18 Master cyl which also made it quite a sharp braking effort, very immediate, but really worked well and saved loads of unsprung weight. Just have to watch pad wear as it can just easily eat them very quickly. I did get through one set after just one session of a track day!! I think they weren't a decent set of race pads though ;) I'm sure I used Lucas pads in the end and they had much better life - just keep an eye on them if you're going single disk. Any pics of the cut down seat you're using? Tim |
Quote:
cheers, I'll be getting some new pads as the old ones have a fair amount of life but think they are std road ones and going from 2 to 1 disc means its more critical I'd guess will put some pics up tomorrow, but I have cut down the sides the same as yours but also shortened it by quite a lot - finishes about 8cm after the end of the trimmed frame (half way up your number board I reckon) tried to keep a similar rounded back to the std. Means you can see under the back but looks much neater imho - just going to get a wet back now when raining!! looking at your pics reminds me, I was going to try the SS tank I have and see hiow I get on now I have a few less inches around the waist. Having changed how I ride, it woulod be nice to try locking a leg in to the tank and seeing if it helps |
I also think the early SS tank looks a lot better too, you need an external fuel pump assy though, and make sure its mounted properly, otherwise you might get it tangle with the throttle linkages, get your throttle stuck wide open and break your collarbone!!! ;) - DOH |
Quote:
cant you use the one that fitted inside? another question: where did you get the rear sets? THey look like they'd help in changing the positioning of mine... |
Sorry, I meant pressure regulator, the pump is indeed inside the tank. As for the rearsets -- hmmmm, I'll need to think about that one - leave it with me.... |
Quote:
Not sure why you needed a pressure reg Tim, as with a T piece fitted in the feed line the excess is returned to the tank, no requirement for a regulator. |
Quote:
is it different because a monster is vacuum not pump fed normally? |
Quote:
Those foot rests are DP ones quite hard to get hold of now & expensive when you do. I used to make some that put them in the same position but cost a fraction of the price, don't think I have any left as I let Dallas have the last couple but I'll have a look in my spares. |
Quote:
cheers Chaz. Is that on Dallas new bike? If so I'll have a try of his and maybe I can get something made up |
Quote:
They were when I built it & I let him have a spare set. Infact several DD'ers use them including Matt Lawson. I could get some more made I think. |

There was on Rattlers Class A fuel injected 620 |
Quote:
so not on my little 583 then kev, just straight swap? may try it this week, trouble is I wont be doing a td before brands race so would be a risk to change before then.. |
No Paul, no need for one on your 583, Rattler would have had to fit the higher pressure pump from a fuel injected model and then the regulator to maintain the fuel pressure at 3 bar |
Quote:
Too much cross purpose chat going on I'm easily confused these days. What window regulator did you want Paul?? |
Quote:
Know what you mean Phil, now I'm past the 50 mark confusing me gets easier :p |

One very important question popped up in my prep list. No not liughtweight bits and pieces or anything else bike related. The most important question is whats the best way of keeping your van warm when we go back to Brands in March. Been looking at oil filled radiators with temperature controls. Also been looking at heater tubes but they seem to have no temperature control. Any (sensible) suggestions? Mark |
Quote:
leave the van running for an hour before you retire, then hot water bottle, 3 layers and 2 sleeping bags. Reckon tent is better really :) |
Book a hotel room, it always works for me :) Maybe that does not fall under "Any (sensible) suggestions?" catigory :) |

Last weekend I dumped the bikes in the garage which left plenty of room for me and 10 sets of Dunlops to be kept warm by a small oil filled radiator, if its going to be colder than last weekend I may have to take two along to take the chill off the air in the van |

Well today was spent addressing some of the things that I picked up on during the test session at Brands The gear position has been adjusted and the rod end bearings replaced as the original ones had seen better times. I pulled the bike back up the forks by 6mm hopefully improving the front rear balance. The original sump plug was replaced with a easily lokwireable one from Ant at Avanti, The oil strainer was drilled and wired. A pair of scrubbed Dunlops fitted. After making a mounting bracket the Red backed Scitsu was fitted to the bike and finally the standard air filter was replaced by a K&N filter. Hopefully a few more hours on it tomorrow and it will be finished ready for next Friday |

you coming to join us in the 'fun' class Kev ? :D |
No Someone else will be out on it, which is why I'm trying to make sure its ready If you've read the right monthly mag you will know who :) |
