996 Petrol Leak

Petrol tank / sender appears to have developed a leak.

Could smell the stuff between the seat and the tank. When I took the tank off could just see a couple of drops of the stuff dripping onto 'out' house - but couldn't see exactly where...took the tank off as didn't want it leaking in the garage (part of the house) and now of course it ain't leaking so I can't see exactly what is causing the prob.

Any idea on likely culprits?

What sort of seals are generally replaced? (2000 Bip).

As far as draining the tank - there appears to be a plug of some description as part of the tank which has an allen bolt, is this what is used to drain it?

Any help appreciated...

Paul

Has the tank been off at all lately? The O-Rings on the fuel connectors are very easily damaged.
The other "seal" on the tank is the O-Ring on the pump housing. These usually either seal or leak. Once fitted they remain leak proof, but if it's just had a filter change then that could be the culprit.
Only other leak could from the breather tube has become detached from the T-piece on the base of the pump.

Cheers guys...

I've only just got the bike (and haven't used it much) I couldn't tell whether the tank had been removed or not, but you mentioned air filters and I don't appear to have any - just bell mouths....

I thought the overflow had came loose though as I lifted the tank the first time the pipe had came off and I reattached it and put a cable clip on it as I thought this was the prob...but it still had some drips there after I put everything back together.

The O-rings look o.k. but I guess it is hard to tell- I'll order some just the same.

Is there any sealant that can be used if it the pump housing - If it is that, or is it worth ordering a new one of thee also?

The air filters are in the airtubes, the open bell mouths are correct. The airbox is sealed by the bottom of the tank!

As Weeksy said, does the tank leak when the fuel lines are removed? If so, then its likely the pump seal in the bottom of the tank, if not, then its likely to be small O-rings on the fuel lines.

With you on that one - I didn't think you had to tank the tank off to change the air filters though?

Just thought there may have been another filter I wasn't aware of....what nelly stated must have meant something else.

The tank doesn't appear to leak when it is off the bike so I'm going to order the O-rings and see how I get on......

Cheers

I think nelly meant the fuel filter which is inside the tank.

I am blessed. I have had both pump housing big o-ring & pipe fitting o-rings let go in the same week. Only one was my fault.
Take off old o-ring from fuel pipe union. Go to friendly local garage person. Swap it for 2 new ones. Garage person will not ask for money as he will be so happy to have genuine racing ducati part as souvenier.
My ones were all perished & cracked.
Pees petrol all over the back cylinder head it does.
